This National Science Week, we’re celebrating the incredible work of our Toxicology Department at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine. Our toxicology team is at the forefront of forensic science, playing a critical role in coronial investigations through the analysis of drugs and poisons. They also provide vital drug testing services for Victoria Police, handling complex cases involving drugs and driving, as well as drug-facilitated crimes.
One of the standout contributions of our laboratory is its involvement in the Emerging Drugs Network of Australia (EDNA) project. Through this initiative, our team is instrumental in identifying trends in illicit drug use, with a particular emphasis on novel psychoactive substances. This pioneering work helps to keep our communities safer by staying ahead of the curve in the ever-evolving landscape of drug use.
But their impact doesn’t stop there! Our toxicology staff are also deeply involved in research and development and are committed to the education and training of the next generation of forensic scientists. Their dedication to excellence ensures that the VIFM remains at the cutting edge of forensic toxicology.
The team pictured here represents just a few of the hardworking members of our Toxicology Liaison Team. This team processes over 20,000 cases annually, managing countless specimens with precision and care. They are responsible for maintaining and calibrating critical equipment, organising the dispatch of samples, including those needed for essential genetic testing, and conducting analytical testing.
In a field where the workload is often unpredictable and demands are high, the team consistently rises to the challenge. They ensure that every task is completed to the highest standard, embodying the values of respect and commitment to service that are central to VIFM. Their professionalism, respect, and friendly demeanour have earned them well-deserved commendations from our stakeholders.
We are proud to showcase their exceptional work this National Science Week as they continue to lead the way in forensic toxicology!
