Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria (DTBV)

Welcome to the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria 

Established in 1989, the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria is the largest tissue bank in Australia as well as being the only one of its kind, processing and distributing multiple types of tissue from the one facility.  It is a not-for-profit organisation which provides a central facility for the acquisition, processing, storage and distribution of tissue for transplantation.

The Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria aims to offer relatives the opportunity to salvage something positive from the tragedy of untimely death.  The Bank's operations are guided by an ethics committee and an advisory board with an emphasis on quality. 

The Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria is located in the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, which forms part of the Coronial Services Centre, along with the State Coroner's Office.

	Background of the DTBV		The DTBV has been foremost in the field of tissue retention since its establishment in 1989.
	Becoming a Donor		For those who are interested in becoming a tissue donor with the Tissue Bank of Victoria, there are a number of considerations.
	Tissue Donation		Tissue donation involves the donation of heart valves, bone, skin, and corneas. DTBV staff evaluate the possibility of tissue donation on a case by case basis.
	Quality Assurance		Quality and safety considerations are paramount in the DTBV tissue retention process.
	Microbiology		The Microbiology Laboratory at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine is located in the Donor Tissue Bank and is responsible for all serological and microbiological testing at the Institute.
	Roles in the DTBV		There are a variety of roles within the DTBV, mainly from scientific and nursing backgrounds.
